Floral Design & Shop Management

Seed Money: A Great Paycheck in a Growing Industry

Flowers have power. They can express love, like a bouquet of red roses on Valentine’s Day. Or even gratitude, like a vase of Gerbera Daisies on Mother’s Day.

Whether they’re center-stage in a bride’s bouquet or just brightening up a business office, flower arrangements are used to say what can’t be said. Relevant to every special occasion, floral designs are part of the fabric of our culture, placing their designers in high demand.

At Golden West, Floral Design and Shop Management students learn the principles of aesthetic design, while gaining hands-on experience in the art of using plant materials and flowers to create pleasing and inspiring compositions.

In addition to arranging flowers, students also gain proficiency in caring for a wide variety of species in the flower, foliage, herb and ornamental grass families, while learning how to manage a floral business, from the inside out.

This program features hands-on courses, taught by instructors who are accredited by the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD), a globally recognized trade organization dedicated to promoting the art of floral design as a professional career.

In addition to Orange County’s only Associate-level floral design program, Golden West College is home to the Shirley Haas Student Chapter of the American Institute of Floral Designers (SAIFD) — the only SAIFD chapter in Southern California.

GWC’s comprehensive, Future Built curriculum covers all aspects of the floral industry and prepares students to become flower processors, designers and assistants, salespersons, managers, owners and entrepreneurs. Talk about flower power!
